ALL ROADS LEAD TO PEACE The 3R's Of Conflict Management: RELAX REFLECT RESPOND A SCHOOL-TO-HOME PROGRAM Created by: Maureen F. Gorie, Eileen Mangan Stull, Susan Speizer Cleveland Municipal Schools Dear Colleague, As educators from the Cleveland Municipal School District and parents ourselves, we realize the importance of teaching and demonstrating effective conflict management. We have developed a program for School to Home use called All Roads Lead to Peace: The 3R's of Conflict Management. This program is unique because we are first and foremost using literature-based experiences to develop proficiency skills while developing problem solving skills that can be used to improve your classroom and school climate. The goal of this program is to create a partnership between the school and the home while empowering the children to become peacemakers when encountering conflicts. As teachers, we naturally teach organizational, study, and homework skills. Just as importantly, we need to develop social behavior skills. We recognize that most discipline problems result from a lack of appropriate social skills that require our attention frequently. These disruptions can be managed, lessened or possibly avoided through the use of this program. This program was designed to fit right into your literacy program on a weekly basis. The materials include two bulletin board posters explaining the 3R's of Conflict Management and a weekly theme poster to display. It includes a complete teacher lesson plan based on a short story or a poem and a level appropriate proficiency-based worksheet. The parent component consists of a letter of explanation and suggested home activities. Many teachers already use a color-coded system of red, yellow and green to set behavior expectations. This system works much like a traffic signal providing students visual cues to alert them of their behavior. We chose the traffic signal invented by Cleveland's own Garrett Morgan because of its simplicity and an easy connection to The 3R's of Conflict Management.
