Using the Book Guide Chart

The last six columns on the chart name the conflict management themes that are illustrated in the story. An "x" in the column simply means that the story deals with that theme or related skill. In some cases you are provided with more specific information.

Under "Conflict" there are lessons that clearly illustrate the causes of conflict. Some show factors that escalate or de-escalate it. Others demonstrate that there can be win-win solutions.

Under "Alternatives" are stories that help students see the benefit of weighing possible alternatives in order to choose the best. Other stories show non-violent responses to conflict including the use of surprise and negotiation.

There are stories that encourage students to view a conflict situation from another "Perspective" or point of view.

The last column indicates those stories which illustrate the effects of bias in conflict situations.

The annotated bibliography that follows the guides offers a preview of titles recommended by elementary school teachers for developing themes of nonviolence and diversity.
