Ohio's Early Childhood Conflict Management Project:
Teaching Healthy and Constructive Ways to Respond to Conflict

The Early Childhood Conflict Management Project is a collaborative effort between the:

Ohio Commission on Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management

Ohio Head Start Association, Inc. (OHSAI)

Ohio Department of Education, Division of Early Childhood.

The
purpose of this project is to assist the OHSAI, public pre-school providers, and child care programs in providing program staff, administrators, parents, and children with healthy and constructive ways to respond to conflict and to effectively resolve disputes

Conflict management
is a philosophy and a set of skills, such as negotiation and mediation, that assist individuals and groups in better understanding and dealing with conflict as it arises in all aspects of their lives.

The project integrates
conflict management into early childhood programs and includes both training and resource materials.

Training

Training is a vital part of this project. A training has been developed to enhance the conflict management and dispute resolution skills of:

  • Program Staff
  • Administrators
  • Parents
  • Caregivers

Conflict Management Training for Adults

An interactive, innovative two-day training designed to instruct parents, staff, administrators and caregivers on preventing and managing adult-to-adult and adult-to-child conflicts. The primary goals of the training are to help:

  • Create an environment in which conflict is accepted as normal and is managed and resolved constructively.
  • Understand the nature and sources of conflict.
  • Examine and understand responses to conflict.
  • Learn and practice skills for managing and resolving conflict.

Resources and Materials

Teaching Skills of Peace Through Children's Literature: Annotated Bibliography

Whether two-years-old or 102-years-old, we all need to know how to solve conflicts peacefully. This bibliography includes an extensive list of children's books to aid parents, teachers, and caregivers in teaching young children skills of conflict management. The bibliography provides sources that support the development of positive attitudes in children about self-esteem, relationships, conflict, feelings, and problem solving. Most books listed in the bibliography are available from public libraries.

Each copy is $10.00.

Learning Skills of Peace Through Everyday Conflicts: Reference Manual and Picture Cards

A manual and an accompanying set of picture cards are available to use to teach children skills of conflict management. The manual and picture cards help adults work with children using songs, stories, and other activities to address behaviors such as anger and aggression, biting, lying and tantrums. Topics such as divorce or separation, bath time, and moving are also covered. The picture cards are available in English and Spanish. To view these card now click here Early Childhood Cards

Each set is $25.00. Picture cards-only, $5.00.
